FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks hockey team posted a big win over RPI on Saturday, Dec. 11. The Nanooks used two first-time goal scorers and a 27-save shutout from
Gustavs Davis Grigals to post a 4-0 win over the Engineers.
13:16 into the first, RPI went on the man-advantage following a roughing penalty called on
Connor Mylymok. While down a man, it took 36 seconds for magic to strike.
Filip Fornaa Svensson intercepted a pass in the RPI attacking-zone and went coast-to-coast, beating Engineer netminder, Linden Marshall on his blocker-side, giving the Nanooks a 1-0 lead on the unassisted, shorthanded goal. This was the Nanooks second shorthanded goal of the season and first since
Brady Risk's on Oct. 9 vs. Clarkson.
Alaska took the lead into the second before adding more.
Simon Falk joined in on the fun, scoring his first-career goal and point, making it 2-0 Nanooks. After making a diving block on an RPI shot, Falk turned on the burners and caught up to an up-ice pass from
Markuss Komuls, resulting in a backhanded shot finding the back of the net. Heading into the third, the Nanooks were looking for their first game with more than two goals. They'd make that happen 7:17 into the final period as
Jordan Muzzillo connected on a loose puck in front of the RPI crease and slid it to the back of the net.
Anton Rubtsov started the frenzy with a shot from the slot;
Chase Dubois had a chance with the rebound, but ended up setting Muzzillo up perfectly for the goal. This was Muzzillo's first-career goal as well, joining Falk on the night of firsts.
This made it 3-0 Alaska. 17:22 into the third,
Didrik Henbrant made it 4-0, snapping the Nanooks losing-streak and putting RPI away for good. He took a pass from
Harrison Israels and coasted his way to an empty-net goal.
On the defensive end, Grigals was spotless, stopping all three shots in the first period, 11 in the second and 13 in the final period for a 27-save shutout. This was Grigals' third shutout of his career and first since Feb. 8, 2020 at Alabama Huntsville in a Nanooks 3-0 win.
These two teams meet again on Tuesday, Dec. 14 at the Carlson Center with a 7:07 puck-drop.
