LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Alaska Nanooks swim team competed on day one of the PCSC Championships at East Los Angeles College on Wednesday, Feb. 12. The 'Nooks had swimmers compete in three separate events.
The first event that Alaska competed in was the 1000-yard freestyle.
Tori Shoemaker,
Caroline McCormick and
Rachel Beal made their 2020 postseason debuts, as all put up personal-bests and season-bests. Shoemaker led the way for the 'Nooks, placing eighth overall with a time of 10:33.87 in the event. Not only was this a personal best, but it was fast enough to place her #6 on the Nanooks All-Time Top 10 list for the 1000-yard freestyle. McCormick put up a PR as well, swimming to a 10:42.44 and 15
th place finish, putting her just outside the Nanooks Top-10 (11
th). Beal came in 18
th place with a 10:47.76 and cracked her season-high time in the long freestyle event.Â

Becca Weiland was very happy with her team's efforts on day one of the PCSC Championships, "The lady Nanooks got us off to a strong start tonight for the first day of conference championships. Shoemaker and
Caroline McCormick popped off incredible time drops tonight in their 1000's and our relays also started off on a strong note. Can't wait to see what we can achieve tomorrow!"

Those strong relays were the next event for the Nanooks as they sent two teams into the 200-yard medley relay. Team A consisted of
Erika Kakazu,
Kaia Norbye,
Oda Bygdnes and
Whitney McArthur. Team B was made up of
Rachel Beal,
Caroline McCormick,
Jessica Williamson and
Kyleigh McArthur. Team A pushed out front and eventually grabbed a solid third place finish, putting up a time f 1:45.15. The second Nanooks relay team finished 16
th, only 10 seconds behind the first Alaska squad, with a time of 1:55.68.Â

The final event that the 'Nooks competed in was the 800-yard freestyle relay. Weiland sent out a team made up of McCormick, Shoemaker, K. McArthur and
Camille Dayton. The four swam to a ninth place finish, putting up a time of 8:07.86.Â

With day one all wrapped up, the 'Nooks will return to the pool tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 13 and compete in the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard IM, 50-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle relay.Â
