Box Score BURNABY, B.C. – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team fell to the Simon Fraser Clan on the road 61-93 dropping Alaska to 6-12, 1-8 GNAC.
The Nanooks started the day off strong, finding themselves down by only one after the first quarter, 15-16. After
Kylie Wallace and
Brittany Richards got the Alaska offense on the board,
Sam Tolliver connected on her first three-pointer of the night giving the Nanooks an early 7-2 lead. After SFU crawled back to grab the lead back, the quarter ended with some back-and-forth basketball resulting in five lead-changes in the final five minutes.
To start the second quarter,
Jocelyn Gandara connected on a jumper just inside the paint to grab a one point, however, that would be the last lead the 'Nooks see the rest of the night. An immediate three-pointer from the Clan following the jumper put SFU by two starting their run to end the half, eventually taking a 27-37 lead over the Nanooks into the locker room.
Sam Tolliver led the scoring for both sides, putting up 11 points while shooting 3-5 from three-point range. She added two assists, keeping the Nanooks in the game.
The second half saw more offensive production come alive for the Nanooks but that unfortunately did not spell success for Alaska as the Clan outscored them 34-56 in the entire second half. Seven minutes into the third quarter, the Nanooks found themselves chasing 28 points as Simon Fraser jumped out to a 32-60 lead.
Despite the deficit,
Sabrina Ungaro did not shy away from the Clan, going 5-6 from the field in the second half and scoring 12 second half points for the Nanooks. She went on to end the night with 14 points on 6-7 shooting, two rebounds and a steal. Tolliver ended the night as the leading scorer putting up 22 points and connecting on five three-pointers.
Wallace was the next closest 'Nook to double-digit points, scoring nine on 4-6 shooting while grabbing three rebounds.
The Nanooks stay on the road and will battle the Western Washington Vikings on Saturday, Jan. 25 in Bellingham, Wash. The Vikings defeated the UAA Seawolves on Thursday, Jan. 23 in Bellingham by the score of 71-64, snapping the #4 team in the nation's 13-game winning streak. The game against WWU will be broadcast on the Alaska Internet Portal and through the WWU Athletics YouTube channel.
