RESULTS

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 14-ranked Alaska Nanook rifle team earned their first win of 2020 today, January 12, against the No. 12-ranked Ohio Buckeyes in Columbus, OH.

The Nanooks tallied the highest team aggregate of the season, 4665, taking the win against the Buckeyes' 4619.

In the individual rankings, five Nanooks claimed top-10 spots. Junior, Haley Castillo claimed the top spot firing an 1173. Sophomore, Kellen McAferty (1167) and junior, Jessica Boyce (1164) earned second and third, respectively. Senior duo, Grace Nelson (1160) and Amy Gentry (1158) claimed fifth and sixth in the aggregate competition.

The Nanooks had an impressive showing in the smallbore competition, firing a team score of 2314. The Buckeyes' fired a team total of 2275.

The Nanooks took the top five smallbore spots, lead by McAferty with a 586. Castillo (578), Nelson (576), Boyce (575), and Gentry (575) took second through fifth, respectively.

The Nanooks slipped past the Buckeyes in the team air rifle competition 2351-2344.

Castillo placed first in the individual air rifle competition with a 595 and Boyce placed third with a 589.

Head Coach, Layne Lewis commented on the team's performance, "It was great having everyone come together today and shoot strong. Our slings were some of the best of the year. We are headed to Palmyra (Penn.) next week for some training and our match with North Georgia and Georgia Southern. The plan is to continue to use our strengths and build off what we learned from this match."

The Nanooks will be back in action against North Georgia and Georgia Southern next Sunday (January 19) in Palmyra, Pennsylvania.
