GOLDEN, Colo. – The Nanook volleyball team ended the Oredigger Classic on Sept. 7
th with a sweep of Fresno Pacific and a four-set loss against the host team, Colorado School of Mines. Despite a slow start to the day, UAF jumped out and claimed the straight sweep: 25-20, 25-19, 25-17. Game two found the 'Nooks in a hole that they were unable to climb out of with a 15-25, 18-25, 25-20, 22-25 four-set loss.
Early Saturday, the Nanooks found themselves down 5-0 in the blink of an eye. The closest game of the three saw six ties and three different lead changes before the 'Nooks ran away with it from the 18-17 point.
Lahra Weber stayed hot on the attack with a 5 kill first set boasting a ridiculous .833 hit percentage. That was only the beginning.
Setter,
Cate Whiting had her day cut out for her with 39 assists while Weber would go on to finish the match with 19 kills and post an unbelievable .593 hit percentage and adding seven service aces and six digs.
"We did a great job of being in the right spot and getting our hands across the net. I thought we played well offensively and distributed the ball well." said head coach
Brian Scott. "We have the potential to be a great team both on the attack and defensively."
Game two, the 'Nooks supporting cast came to play.
Kim Wong and
AveRee Reynolds stepped up to be the main point of attack, both ending the day in double digit kills. Despite their spread offense, CSM was too much for UAF.
After dropping sets one and two, the Nanooks climbed back to claim set three, 25-20, in hopes of a comeback. Set four started off well for UAF who then found themselves in a back and forth match. Unfortunately for the 'Nooks they found themselves chasing one point one time too many.
"With the exception of a slow start against CSM, hitters did a great job of swinging high and fast." added Scott.
Whiting added another great game with 37 assists and
Makena Overbey added 12 digs to her name, but it wasn't enough for the Nanooks.
The UAF volleyball team will return home and then take off to Los Angeles Sept. 12
th through the 14
th for the D2 West Region Showcase, hosted by California State, Los Angeles.
