Nanooks Fall in D2 Showcase Double-header

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Nanooks volleyball team struggled Thursday, Sept. 12, falling in both of their D2 West Volleyball Showcase matches. Cal State, Los Angeles took the afternoon match in three sets, 25-14, 25-15 and 25-22. In the second match, Cal State, East Bay took the match in straight sets too, 25-22, 25-22 and 26-24.

After a weekend in Colorado, UAF continued their 2019 with yet another out-of-state tournament, this time in sunny Los Angeles. Alaska entered Thursday looking for their first win against both LA teams in matchup history. Unfortunately they will have to wait for their next meeting to claim that elusive win.

Game one saw the Nanooks struggle both offensively and defensively. Despite winning the block party at the net, UAF hit a combined .099, compounded with 16 errors, 7 of which came in the first set alone. Emily Moorhead led the way at the net for UAF tallying three blocks. Markie Miller and Kim Wong added two to their name.

"CSULA was a tough team and they deserve credit for their great play." Coach Brian Scott said, "Defensively we were not disciplined and past that we just could not put it together."

Miller and Wong also led the 'Nooks in kills, combing for 13 and swinging over .200.

Game two saw some turnaround for Alaska, but not enough to get in the win column. Despite winning the battle in every major team category, the Nanooks couldn't manage to get and keep a lead. All sets ended within three, but the early errors dug UAF into too deep of a hole.

"The CSUEB game was all about errors, and we had too many of them." added coach Scott. "It is hard to take care of business when you do something good and go back to the service line and miss the serve. We scored the points we needed, got the kills we needed, and even blocked well, but the overall errors were too much to overcome."

Wong was the only Nanook to reach double-digits in kills on the day with 10 against CSUEB. AveRee Reynolds also filled up the score sheet in game two with seven kills and four blocks.

Cate Whiting added her first double-double on the young season. She recorded 31 assists and 12 digs.

The 'Nooks will be back in action Friday, Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. AKT. and will take on Hawaii Pacific University.
