FAIRBANKS, Alaska – On Monday, Alaska Nanooks associate head swimming coach Becca Weiland announced the addition of Alexis Mattson, who signed her National Letter of Intent to join the Nanooks swimming program in the fall of 2019.

"Alexis is an exemplary type of in-state talent we are looking for in a Nanook student-athlete," Weiland said on Monday. "She is an excellent student who will help our team academically and will be a fantastic addition to our breaststroke and individual medley groups. We are delighted that Alexis has chosen to come swim for the University of Alaska Fairbanks next fall."

A native of Wasilla, Mattson signs with the Nanooks after placing fifth overall in the 100-yard breaststroke and eighth overall in the 200-yard individual medley at the 2018 Alaska State Activities Association's State Swimming and Diving Championships. Most notably a breaststroke swimmer, Mattson is a four-time varsity athlete with the Colony High School swim team and has represented the Knights all four years at the ASAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

Mattson was voted CHS' team captain for the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons and received the team's MVP award in 2018.

Not only is Mattson a gifted athlete competitively, she is also a standout leader on the pool deck. Mattson received numerous Colony High School swim team leadership awards, including the Spirit Award (2017), the Leadership Award (2014), the Sportsmanship Award (2013) and the Most Dedicated Athlete award (2012).

Mattson will kick-off the 2019 academic year with numerous Advanced Placement (AP) and Mat-Su College credits under her belt. Mattson plans to major in Biology and eventually obtain a doctorate degree and pursue physical therapy.

If Mattson were on the Alaska Nanooks swim team at the 2018 Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference Championships, her top times would have added to the Nanooks' results with "C"-final appearances in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke events.

Top Times:
100-yard breaststroke: 1:08.78
200-yard breaststroke: 2:31.73
200-yard individual medley: 2:16.61
