FAIRBANKS, Alaska – On Friday, Alaska Nanooks associate head swimming coach
Becca Weiland announced the addition of Tori Shoemaker, who signed her National Letter of Intent to join the Nanooks swimming program in the fall of 2019.
"Tori is an incredibly talented young woman, who is the epitome of a versatile student-athlete," Weiland said on Friday. "Tori not only excels in multiple strokes and distances in the pool, but also in open water competitions, as well. Tori will be a great asset for our middle distance and distance groups and we are honored to be a part of her future as a Nanook student-athlete."
A native of Savannah, Georgia, Shoemaker comes to the Nanooks as an accomplished muddle distance, distance and open water swimmer, who specializes in the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 400-yard individual medley and the 5km open water race.
As a member of the Georgia Coastal Aquatics Team, Shoemaker has represented her home state at the Southern Open Water Zone Championships in the past three years and was the 2016 women's open water 5km champion at the Pompano POWER Open Water Challenge in Florida.
As a student at the Savannah Arts Academy, Shoemaker placed fourth in the 500-yard freestyle and sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke at the 2018 Georgia 1-5A High School State Swimming Championships. Out of the pool, Shoemaker is a member of the Savannah Arts Academy's National Art Honors Society.
If Shoemaker were on the Alaska Nanooks team in 2018's Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference Championships, her career-best 400-yard individual medley time would have ranked her 11th, 13th in the 500-yard freestyle and 16th in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Top Times:
400-yard individual medley: 4.39.64
500-yard freestyle: 5:05.57
200-yard breaststroke: 2:26.61
