FAIRBANKS, Alaska –
The Alaska Nanooks coed rifle team closed out the Patriot Rifle Conference Championships at the Alaska Airlines Court on Sunday morning, placing fifth in air rifle with a score of 2349. Combined with Saturday's smallbore team score of 2311, Alaska closes out the PRC Championships in fifth place with an aggregate score of 4660.

Air Force won the overall PRC Championships title on Sunday with an aggregate total of 4708, followed by Texas Christian University (4695), Nevada (4665), Ohio State (4661), Alaska and the University of Texas at El Paso (4610).

"There were a lot of high scores shot in the gym today with 16 shooters over 590, which made for a very close match with only five points separating third through fifth place," head coach Layne Lewis said on Sunday. "All of the visiting coaches, athletes and families were very excited for this event. It was the largest championship in PRC history and everyone is looking forward to when we host again in 2023."

Over the two-day match, Alaska placed third in smallbore and fifth in air rifle to rank fifth overall. Senior JT Schnering's aggregate score of 1174 ranked him fourth individually, posting a smallbore score of 583 and an air rifle score of 591.

At the conclusion of the event, Schnering was named to the PRC All-Conference Smallbore Team.

Air Force's Peter Fiori ranked first overall individually, registering a smallbore score of 590 and an air rifle score of 592 to tally an aggregate score of 1184.

In Sunday's air rifle portion, sophomore Haley Castillo was the highest-ranking Nanook with a 592, putting her in a four-way tie for sixth place. Unfortunately, Castillo lost in a tiebreaker to qualify for the air rifle finals, which featured the top eight individuals on the day.

Schnering was the only other Alaska shooter to rank within the top 10 individually, collecting a 591 to tie for 10th place.

The Alaska Nanooks coed rifle team will head to El Paso, Texas to compete in an NCAA qualifying match hosted by UTEP on Saturday, Feb. 16.
