@NanooksRifle Takes Second in NCAA Qualifying Match

EL PASO, Texas – The Alaska Nanooks coed rifle team secured a second place finish in their NCAA qualifying match against the #16 Nevada Wolfpack and the #18 UTEP Miners.

The Nanooks tied for first place with Nevada in the smallbore discipline, with both teams shooting 2304. UTEP followed with a 2273. Nevada took the Nanooks in air rifle, recording a 2362 over Alaska's 2356. Overall, Nevada took first with an aggregate score of 4666. The Nanooks were close behind with a 4660 and UTEP secured their spot in third with a 4590.

"It was a fun match today with UTEP and Reno" head coach,
Layne Lewis, said on Saturday. "There were several good scores shot today by all the teams. J.T. was top shooter of the day posting his season high aggregate of 1178. Kellen, Robert, Liam and Haley also made the top ten shooters of the match. Now we will wait for the NCAA selection show on Wednesday."  

Senior,
J.T. Schnering lead the competition with his aggregate score of 1178. Schnering lead the air rifle discipline with an individual score of 593 and took second in the smallbore discipline with a 585, just one point behind Nevada's Mitchell Van Patten.

Kellen McAferty took fourth in the overall competition with an 1167. Senior, Robert Scott followed in sixth place with an 1153. Haley Castillo (1151), and Liam Eberhart (1151) also secured top ten finishes.

Junior,
Amy Gentry, broke the top ten in the smallbore competition with a 569 to round out the scorers for the Nanooks.

The Alaska Nanooks coed rifle team will now wait for the NCAA Rifle Championships selection show before hopefully punching a ticket to the National Championships in in Morgantown, WV. The selection show will air on Wednesday, February 19, 2019 at 1pm AKST on NCAA.com.
