@NanooksVB Sweeps the Wolves of Western Oregon

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team made quick work of the Western Oregon Wolves on Saturday, Nov. 9, sweeping WOU in a match that lasted just over an hour. The Nanooks claimed the victory with set wins of 25-19, 25-13, 25-11.

Lahra Weber led the way on the offensive side for the Nanooks while Makena Overbey had another impressive day in the back-line for the 'Nooks defense with 17 digs. Set one was the closest set of the day. The Wolves grabbed an early 6-12 lead over the 'Nooks. Head coach Brian Scott took a quick timeout and the following play seemed like a new Nanooks team. A quick five-point run for the Alaska team quickly made it 11-12. After exchanging points back-and-forth, the Nanooks grabbed the lead at 17-16 and never looked back. Alaska went on to claim eight of the next 10 points and win the set, 25-19.

The next two sets went by quick. Set two, the Wolves jumped out to another early lead, this time 0-3, but despite the quick start, the Nanooks had an answer. Kills from Zoey Keene and Markie Miller and two service aces by Lahra Weber highlighted an eight-point run that put the 'Nooks ahead, 16-10. WOU would only score three more points that set as the Nanooks attack and defense clicked on every level. Kills from Cate Whiting and Kim Wong ended the second set, giving Alaska the 25-13 win.

The final set saw Alaska jump out to the early lead. Three Mica Chen service aces gave the Nanooks all the momentum they needed as they started the set off with an 8-1 lead. The Wolves would get a couple points back, but not before the Nanooks held a 15-6 lead by the midway point of the set. Alaska grabbed nine of the final 12 points and grabbed the quick sweep of Western Oregon.

Miller ended the day with eight kills while Wong added six and Zoey Keene put up five kills. Cate Whiting also had 21 assits to her name in the Nanooks win.

Alaska will head on the road for one final road trip of the 2019 season this upcoming week. They will head to Burnaby, B.C. to face Simon Fraser and then Bellingham, Wash. to face Western Washington before ending the regular-season at home on Nov. 21 and Nov. 23 for senior weekend.
