@NanooksVB Defeats Tough Simon Fraser Team on the Road

BURNABY, B.C. – The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team defeated the Simon Fraser Clan in three sets on Thursday, Nov. 14 to improve to 14-11, 11-6 GNAC. This win continues the Nanooks winning streak, giving them four consecutive victories and also snaps the Clan's three game winning streak.

Alaska jumped out and grabbed themselves a set one victory after claiming an early 17-7 lead. The SFU attack had a small response, getting back within three points at 21-18, but with the help of three Clan errors, the Nanooks managed to take the first set 25-21. Alaska benefited from Simon Fraser's errors as SFU ended up outhitting the 'Nooks, 10-14 in kills, however, 13 errors by the Clan gave the Nanooks the advantage.

In the second set, the Alaska offense came to life. With 14 team kills in the set and three from Lahra Weber and Cate Whiting each, the 'Nooks won the long battle. After taking an early 10-7 lead, the set played back-and-forth as neither team grabbed and kept a lead. Following a 13-13 tie, the game went back and forth until a Kim Wong kill gave Alaska a 19-17 lead. This kill, however, did not swing the momentum; Simon Fraser was able to regroup and eventually grab a late lead at 20-21. Two blocks from Emily Moorhead, Whiting and Weber grabbed the lead back for the Nanooks. Eventually the game was tied up at 24-24 before an SFU service error and Wong kill handed the set two win to Alaska.

Head coach Brian Scott found his team putting the pressure on SFU helped create opportunities, "We played up to the level of our competitors. SFU is a great team and they make it very hard to score. We did a great job of generating the kills needed to win the game. I thought we did a nice job putting enough pressure on them with our serve that it made for some easier defensive reads. "

Alaska ended the day with three service aces, coming from Taylor Overn, Moorhead and Whiting. As for the kills that won the game, the Nanooks put up a match-high, 15 kills in the third set, swinging .225 as well. Weber led the way for the Nanooks with 13 kills on the day, swinging a .098 percentage and added seven digs. Cate Whiting assisted on 28 balls, had 10 digs and ended with five kills on the day.

In the third and final set, Wong put four kills on the board, giving her nine on the night and helped the Nanooks win the match, 25-21. Simon Fraser jumped out to an early lead, but a couple of Clan attack errors allowed the 'Nooks to get going. After tying the game at 19-19, Alaska won six of the final eight points, taking the lead and claiming the victory 25-21. This victory is one of the biggest in recent history for the Nanooks volleyball team as it came against a West Region powerhouse, and a Simon Fraser team that recently received votes for the NCAA Top 25 Poll and was ranked 8th in the first Regional Poll of the season.

The Nanooks volleyball team will stay on the road and finish their road-trip in Bellingham, Wash. against the Western Washington Vikings on Nov. 16 at 6:00 p.m. AKT.
