Fairbanks, Alaska - The Alaska Nanooks swim team lost the first of their two meets against Seattle University. The Redhawks defeated the Nanooks, 87-116, winning five of the 11 events held on day one. This loss drops the Nanooks to 0-5 on the 2019-20 season.
The first event of the day, the 400-yard medley relay, resulted in a victory for the Nanooks. The medley relay team consisted of Erika Kakazu, Kaia Norbye, Oda Bygdnes, and Kayla Suominen. Together they finished with a time of 3:56.24 to take first place.
Camille Dayton took a commanding first place in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:47.52. She finished a full 37 seconds ahead of second place.
Kayla Suominen finished second in the 200-yard freestyle. She was followed in fifth and sixth by Rachel Beal and Alexis Mattson.
Erika Kakazu added another first place finish under her belt with a win in the 100-yard backstroke, with a time of 1:00.77. Jessica Williamson and Alexis Mattson also placed in this event, in fifth and sixth respectively.
Kaia Norbye grabbed a win in the 50-yard freestyle, with a time of 24.43. Carol McCormick finished first in the 500-yard freestyle, with a time of 5:16.61. She finished almost a full 13 seconds ahead of second place.
In the final event of the night, the 200-yard freestyle relay, a team comprised of Kayla Suominen, Whitney McArthur, Oda Bygdnes, and Kaia Norbye claimed first place with a time of 1:37.73.
The Nanooks will take on the RedHawks on Nov. 16 at 10:00 a.m. AKT in an attempt to grab their first victory of the season.
