FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team is off to Southern California this weekend as they take on Biola University and Point Loma. The Nanooks are off to a 2-0, 0-0 GNAC start in the 2019-20 season.

Last Time Out
The Nanooks are coming off of a 2-0 season start in their non-conference matchups with San Francisco State and Chaminade last weekend in Anchorage. In game one, the Nanooks won a close matchup, 71-66 over the Gators from San Francisco State as
Jocelyn Gandara led all scorers with 20 points on 7-17 shooting and 4-6 shooting from the free throw line. In game two, the Nanooks were led by
Sam Tolliver and
Kylie Wallace, who each checked in with 18 points in a run-away win for the 'Nooks over the Chaminade Silverswords, 92-47.

Newcomer's Lead the Way
The Alaska women's basketball team saw a lot of turnover from last season as they welcomed six new faces to the team. This year's newcomer's have shown up and proved themselves in just the first two games.
Sam Tolliver, a sophomore from Seattle, Wash. stepped up for 18 points in the Chaminade game and 17 in the San Francisco State victory, proving her offensive side.
Jocelyn Gandara proved herself in the paint and on the offensive front, recording a double-double in game one with 20 points and 11 rebounds. In game two, Gandara provided 11 points and six rebounds as well as three steals.
Scouting the Opponents – Biola and Point Loma
Biola
Biola currently finds themselves 1-1, 0-0 PacWest after going 11-17, 9-13 PacWest in 2018-19. Danita Estorga is the leading scorer for BU through two games, averaging 16.5 points per game while shooting 34% from the field. She currently averages nine rebounds per game while playing the second amount of minutes on the team with 54. Jazz Benn is the second highest scorer on BU at the moment while also averaging the most minutes per game. Benn provides 12.5 points per game, 3.5 rebounds per game while shooting 42% from the field.
Point Loma
The Sea Lions have played two close games to open the season, losing to Cal Poly Pomona, 71-81 in their season-opener before grabbing a five-point win over Cal State, San Bernardino 86-81 on Nov. 9. PLNU is led by Carol Schroeder in scoring as Schroeder is putting up 17.5 points per game while shooting 58% from the field and 50% from three-point range. She also averages seven rebounds per game. Cara Liggins is just behind Schroeder in scoring and rebounds, averaging 17 points per game and six rebounds per game. Liggins, through two games, is averaging the most time on court for the Sea Lions with 35 minutes per game.
