FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Alaska Nanooks men's basketball team will head to Monterey, Calif. this weekend for a two-game getaway against Cal State, Monterey and Cal State, San Marcos with both games being played at Monterey.

Last Time Out
The Nanooks men's basketball team is coming off of an opening-weekend split while in Anchorage. They fell in the season-opener to Chaminade University, 64-90, but responded with a strong game against Hawaii Pacific, a game in which they won thank to the last-second heroics of
Koby Huerta who won it from half-court. The final was 75-73.
Showtime Shabazz
Shadeed Shabazz, in just two games, has shown Alaska and the rest of the GNAC, why he should be considered one of the most feared scorers. In their unofficial, season-opener against Fort Wainwright, Shabazz put up 46 points. Through the first two games of the season, Shabazz is averaging 21 points per game, while shooting 40% from the field and is 100% from the charity stripe.
Newcomer Minutes
The Nanooks welcomed 10 new faces to Fairbanks this offseason, creating a new feel in the gym for second year, head coach
Greg Sparling. The newcomers have played a key role in the year so far, with Shadeed averaging 21 ppg, Huerta is averaging 9 ppg and
Markel Banks, a transfer-junior, is averaging 10 ppg.
Scouting the Opponents – CS Monterey, CS San Marcos
Cal State, Monterey
Monterey enters the Friday game as the host-team for this four team invite. The Otters are currently 1-1, 0-0 CCAA on the season. They fell to Alaska GNAC-rival, Central Washington in the CCAA/GNAC Crossover on Nov. 8, 93-73. They came back a day later and knocked off another GNAC foe, Concordia University, 97-92.
Cal State, San Marcos
San Marcos finds themselves 1-1, 0-0 CCAA as well entering this weekend's invite. Both Alaska and CSSM will have played a third game on the season once their matchup comes on Saturday. The Cougars won their season-opener on Nov. 8 over Biola in an overtime matchup, 86-75 before falling to No. 23 Concordia-Irvine by only two, 66-68.
