@NanooksRifle Squeaks Past Ohio State at Home

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Alaska Nanooks rifle team welcomed the Ohio State University Buckeyes to the E.F. Horton Range on campus on Oct. 11. The 'Nooks moved to 3-0, 3-0 PRC on the season after defeating the Buckeyes, 4660-4658.

Ohio State took the top two individual placements on day one, but the Nanooks rallied elsewhere to win it as a team. In the smallbore standings, Amy Gentry and Kellen McAferty took first and second, as Gentry shot 582 and McAferty shot 581. The next Alaska shooter was Grace Nelson, who placed fifth overall with a 575. Nelson found her way into the top ten overall, finishing ninth with an aggregate score of 1157.

Jessica Boyce was the top-finisher for the Nanooks in air rifle, finishing second with a score of 593. The only shooter to best that was Ariel Hall of Ohio State who shot a 596. Haley Castillo took fifth and was the next 'Nook with a score of 591.

The Nanooks have Saturday, Oct. 12 off as Ohio State will take on the NCAA defending champion, TCU. The Ohio State-TCU shoot will be held at the Tanana Valley Sportsman Association. Texas Christian will then turn-around and face off with the Nanooks on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 8 a.m. Oct. 13 will be more than just another match for Alaska. They will also celebrate seniors, Amy Gentry and Grace Nelson, as it is the
Nanooks final home match of the season.

Head coach Layne Lewis had this to say about his shooters performances today, "Our smallbore really improved today, it was nice to see everyone's slings come together in a match. We keep getting better with each match which is what I like to see. It is a busy weekend for us, shooting two matches while hosting a gun show, but it is always fun too. Ohio is great to shoot with and the gun show will bring in more spectators on Sunday for our match with TCU. Sunday will also be our last home match for our seniors, Amy and Grace. They have been so great to work wiht over the past four years and they have become strong and commanding members within the team and are putting up some great scores. I am excited to see how they will lead the team against TCU, the defending champions, and our toughest match yet."

The Nanooks will take a month off after Sunday, and hit the road on Nov. 22, as they travel to El Paso, Texas to face UTEP.
