COLUMBUS, Ohio
– The Alaska Nanooks rifle team posted their second highest score of the season to take the victory against #12 Akron and #13 Ole Miss on the road Sunday morning. The Nanooks had a strong match, registering an aggregate score of 4688. Ole Miss was only three points behind, scoring a 4685. Akron took third, scoring a 4640.

"It was another close match again today." Head coach, Layne Lewis stated, "We had a very strong smallbore to start the day off, our second highest this season. Kellen was the top smallbore of the day with J.T. and Liam taking second and third. Haley placed third in air and J.T. in fourth. There were only five points separating the top ten in air, which made it very close and fun! We are ready to head back for the start of classes and continue training for our conference championships February 2-3."

Four Nanook shooters secured spots in the top ten at the match. Freshman, Kellen McAferty and senior, J.T. Schnering tied for the top aggregate score, both tallying an 1175. Sophomore, Haley Castillo, shot an 1168 to place fourth and junior, Liam Eberhart, took ninth with a 1161, only three points behind Ole Miss' Harley Gardner (1164).

In the smallbore standings, McAferty took first with an impressive 587, followed closely by Eberhart (585), and Schnering took third with a 584.

The match hosted an impressive air rifle competition, with the top seven athletes shooting 590's or higher. Castillo led the Nanooks in the air rifle competition with a 592, taking third overall. She was followed closely by Schnering who shot a 591 to secure his spot in fourth.

The Alaska Nanook rifle team will be back in action February 2-3 when they host the Patriot Rifle Conference Championships in the Patty Center Gym.
