FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The No. 3-ranked Alaska Nanooks coed rifle team officially kicks-off the 2018-19 season by hosting the No. 14 Ohio State Buckeyes and the No. 8 Nebraska Cornhuskers in three separate matches this weekend.

The Alaska Nanooks rifle team returns for the 2018-19 season looking to bounce back after a disappointing showing at the 2018 NCAA Rifle Championships in Charleston, South Carolina last March. The Nanooks finished sixth in the team category at the championships, posting a team aggregate score of 4669. Former Nanook
Sagen Maddalena was the highest-ranking Nanook throughout the championships, posting a team-best smallbore score of 586 and a team-best air rifle score of 596 for a aggregate score of 1182.
Lewis Era Continues
Alaska Nanooks rifle head coach
Layne Lewis returns for his third season as head boss. Lewis was hired prior to the 2016-17 season as the interim head coach before officially being named the team's head coach in the summer of 2017. Lewis is a hometown product of Fairbanks and also a Nanook rifle alumni.
Alaska Ranked
According to the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association release on Oct. 3, the Nanooks were selected third in the CRCA Rankings. Alaska's weekend competition was also featured in the weekly rankings, as Nebraska was slated for eighth, while Ohio State was ranked 14th. Reigning National Champion Kentucky was placed first.
The Kids are Back
Seven of Alaska's nine shooters on this year's roster are returners for the 2017-18 season, including three of the five student-athletes who participated in the NCAA Rifle Championships last March. The Nooks welcome back sophomore

New Faces on the Range
The 2017-18 Nanooks rifle team welcomes two newcomers this season, including
Morgan Erickson (Powell, Wyo.) and
Kellen McAferty (Littlerock, Wash.).
Weekend Outlook
Each of the three matches this weekend are head-to-head battles with the Nooks taking on the Ohio State Buckeyes on Friday, Oct. 12 at the E.F. Horton Rile Range. The Nanooks will take Saturday, Oct. 13 off before returning to the E.F. Horton Rifle Range to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskiers on Sunday, Oct. 14.
Saturday's match will be between Ohio State and Nebraska only, at the Tanana Valley Sportsman's Association.
All matches are set to begin at 9am AKT, with the second relays taking place at 1:30pm AKT.
