BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In her first championships appearance, Alaska Nanooks sophomore swimmer Cassidy Heaton placed 34th in the 1,000-yard freestyle event at the 2017 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving National Championships at the Crossplex Complex on Wednesday morning.
Heaton, the lone representative from the Nanooks at the Championships, posted a 1,000-yard time of 10:19.45 to rank 34th of 47 competitors in the event. Of her 20 split times, Heaton's fastest 50-yard time was 28.03.
West Chester's Georgia Wright placed first overall in the 1,000-yard freestyle event, posting a time of 9:48.87. Heaton's time was only 31 seconds behind Wright's.
The Fairbanks native qualified for the NCAA National Championships after posting a 1,000-yard freestyle time of 10:11.27 at the Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference Championships in Feb.
After suffering a post-season ban in 2015-16 due to NCAA infractions, Heaton becomes the first Nanook to qualify for the Championships since then and becomes the second Alaskan to qualify for nationals after Martha Hood in 2014-15.
