MONTEREY RAY, Calif. – Two from the Alaska Nanooks swim team advanced to the finals in second day of the Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference Championships at the East Los Angeles Aquatic Complex.
Junior Martha Hood was the highest-finishing swimmer overall for the Alaska Nanooks, placing 10th in the preliminary heat of the 50-yard freestyle before recording another 10th place finish in the finals of the same event. In the preliminary race, Hood finished with a time of 00:24.07 before almost matching her time in the finals with a 00:24.08.
Seniors Nga Nguyen and Victoria Adams also raced in the 50 free, registering times of 00:25.81 and 00:25.00, respectively.
In the 500-yard freestyle, sophomores Cassidy Heaton (5:09.75) and Sierra Kinworthy (5:10.33) both posted top-20 finishes in the preliminary race, placing 17th and 19th, respectively. Although Heaton didn't participate in the finals race, Kinworthy collected a time of 5:13.17 to place 21st overall.
The Nanooks also swam in the 200-yard freestyle relay, placing eighth overall with a time of 1:38.15. The relay squad was comprised of Hood (24.21), Adams (24.36), Nguyen (26.69) and junior Katie Stark (24.74).
After two days of events, Alaska sits in ninth place in the PCSC Championships with 156.5 points.
The Alaska Nanooks swim team returns to the pool for their third day of competition at the conference championships tomorrow (Friday), Feb. 10.
