MONTEREY PARK, Calif.  – The Alaska Nanooks swim team returned to action on Wednesday, racing in the opening day of the Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference Championships at the East Los Angeles Aquatics Complex in Monterey Park.
The highlight of the day was sophomore Cassidy Heaton's fourth place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle, touching the wall at 10:11.27. Heaton's time broke Alaska's varsity record in the 1,000 free by over 14 seconds.
Sophomore transfer Sierra Kinworthy placed 11th overall in the same event, touching at 10:26.96.
Fresno Pacific's Laura Fornshell placed first overall in the distance free, completing the 1,000 yards in 9:59.00.
The only other finals event the Nanooks competed in on Wednesday was the 200-yard medley relay, in which Alaska placed fifth overall with a time of 1:46.97. The relay consisted of senior Victoria Adams, senior Nga Nguyen, junior Martha Hood and junior Katie Stark.
Fresno Pacific also took first place overall in the medley relay, combining for a team time of 1:42.60.
Adams competed in the preliminary time trails for the 200-yard IM and the 50-yard freestyle before the Nanooks called it a day. Both the 200 IM and the 50 free finals will be held tomorrow (Feb. 9).
The Alaska Nanooks will return to the LA Aquatics Complex tomorrow (Thursday), Feb. 9 for day two of the PCSC Championships.
