RENO, Nevada – The No. 5th-ranked Alaska Nanooks coed rifle team continued their five-match win streak on Sunday, defeating the University of Nevada Wolfpack 4695-4679 at the UN Rifle Range in Reno. Sunday's victory keeps Alaska's undefeated season alive, as the Nooks are now 5-0 on the 2017-18 season.
"We shot very well today and hats off to Reno, who hosted a great match," head coach
Layne Lewis said on Sunday. "They shot a program record against us but I'm very proud of our team for continuing to push the score, as we posted one of the highest team air rifle scores I've seen in recent years with numerous 590s. It's always fun shooting with Reno and we look forward to seeing them again at our home range in January."
Alaska posted a smallbore score of 2324 to Nevada's 2311, while registering a team air rifle score of 2371 to Nevada's 2368.
Redshirt-senior co-captain
Sagen Maddalena was the top-individual scorer on Sunday, posting an aggregate total of 1189. Maddalena was also the first place shooter in smallbore with a score of 590, while also posting tying a career personal-best score in air rifle by registering a 599. Sunday marks the fourth-straight match that Maddalena has been the highest-scoring individual shooter.
Junior JT Schnering registered an aggregate score of 1171 to place second overall individually, collecting a 579 in smallbore to tie for third and an air rifle score of 592 for a career personal-best.
Nevada's Emily Capaul and Mitchell Van Patten placed third and fourth individually overall, tying with aggregate scores of 1170.
Sophomore Amy Gentry was the third-highest ranking Nanook on the day, posting an aggregate score of 1169 with a smallbore score of 579 and a air rifle score of 590, a career personal-best.
Rounding out Alaska's top-five scorers was senior
Luke Johnson (1163) and redshirt-junior Robert Scott (1155), who placed seventh and 10th, respectively.
Alaska will back in action on Monday, Jan. 8, as they take on the Jacksonville State University Gamecocks in Jacksonville, Georgia.
