EL PASO, Texas –
After a month-long hiatus, the Alaska Nanooks coed rifle team returned to the range on Friday morning by defeating the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) Miners 4664-4576. Four of Alaska's six shooters claimed four of the top-five overall individual standings, led by redshirt-senior Sagen Maddalena.

"Our smallbore wasn't where we needed it to be today," head coach Layne Lewis said on Friday. "But it will be something we will look to improve upon going into our match against Nevada on Sunday. I'm really proud of our air rifle scores today with three different shooters posting above 590."

As a team, Alaska's top-five shooters tallied a smallbore score of 2297 and an air rifle score of 2367 to collect an aggregate total of 4664. The Miners' 4576 included a 2262 in smallbore and a 2314 in air rifle.

For the third-straight match, Maddalena was the highest individual shooter on the day, posting an aggregate total of 1181. The Groveland, California native also placed first in air rifle with a score of 598 and smallbore, totaling 583.

Senior Luke Johnson placed second overall individually, combining for an aggregate score of 1166 with a smallbore tally of 576 (second overall) and an air rifle score of 590 (third overall). Right behind Johnson was junior JT Schnering, who placed third overall individually with an aggregate score of 1164, placing second in air rifle with a 593 and fourth in smallbore with a 571.

Closing out the top-five individually was sophomore Amy Gentry, who placed third in smallbore with a 573 and sixth in air rifle with a 1157 to place fourth overall individually with an aggregate score of 1157.

The Alaska Nanooks coed rifle team will take Saturday off before heading to Reno, Nevada to face-off against the University of Nevada Wolfpack on Sunday, Nov. 19.
