LOS ANGELES – It was another impressive day in the pool for the Alaska Nanooks swim team, as the Nooks collected six first-place finishes in nine events in the second and final day of the Loyola Marymount Lion's Cup at the Burns Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon.
Alaska was one of four schools competing in the Lion's Cup, all of which compete in the Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference. At the conclusion of the day, Alaska combined for 155 team points to win the NCAA Division II section of the meet against Dixie State (143.5), while LMU defeated Pepperdine 286-280.5 in the NCAA Division I category.
The Alaska 200-yard freestyle relay group consisting of junior Martha Hood, senior Victoria Adams, senior Nga Nguyen and junior Katie Stark placed second in the event with a time of 1:38.59. The host team narrowly out-touched the Nanooks in the 200 freestyle relay, edging the Nanooks by 00:00.07 of a second with a total time of 1:38.52.
Hood was the highest-ranking Nanook in the 100-yard butterfly, posting a fourth place finish with a time of 1:00.7. Stark followed closely behind with a time of 1:01.64 for sixth place overall.
The Nanooks recorded their first first-place finish of the day when Nguyen took home the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:08.89. Pepperdine's Juju Chan and Anna Riekhof tied for second place with a time of 1:09.42, with Nguyen edging out the DI competitors by almost one second.
Adams kept Alaska's momentum going, placing first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 00:58.53, edging out Loyola's Alyce-faye Eichelberger, who posted a second-place time of 00:59.29. Adams and Eichelberger were the only two swimmers out of 21 in the event to register a time less than one minute.
In the 400-yard medley relay, Alaska's nationally rank squad of Adams, Nguyen, Hood and Stark placed first overall with a time of 4:01.26. The Nanooks finished a full two seconds ahead of second-place Loyola Marymount, who posted a time of 4:03.98.
Sophomore Cassidy Heaton continues to dominate the distance freestyle races, finishing the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:51.87 for first place overall. Teammate Sierra Kinworthy posted an impressive finish behind Heaton for second place overall with a time of 17:57.42. Of the eight swimmers that competed in the distance race, only Heaton and Kinworthy recorded times under the 18-minute mark.
Stark posted a first-place victory in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 00:53.93, while Hood placed seventh overall with a time of 00:55.82.
Adams set an Alaska Nanooks varsity record in the 100-yard IM on Saturday, placing first overall with a time of 00:59.57. Of the 13 swimmers competing in the event, Adams was the only Nanook to complete the race in under a minute. Teammate Nguyen placed 10th overall with a time of 1:06.55.
After an exhausting day for the small group of Nanooks, Alaska finished out the LMU Lion's Cup by taking second in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:39.77.
The Alaska Nanooks swim team will be back in action Feb. 8-11, competing in the PCSC Conference Championships at the East Los Angeles College Aquatics Complex in LA.
