Rifle Completes Sweep With Win At Nevada

RENO, NV — After two days of shooting the Alaska Nanooks rifle team closed out their first road trip of the season in winning fashion to complete a three-match sweep, topping the Nevada Wolf Pack 4,666-4,610. The Nanooks shot for their best team score shot since a victory against the University of Texas-El Paso in January of 2008.

The Nanooks shot their portion of the match on Friday, while Nevada split up its squad so some team members shot on Friday and others shot on Saturday against UTEP.

Alaska won both disciplines handily, registering scores of 2,320-2,268 in the smallbore portion of the match and 2,346-2,342 in air rifle.

Leading the way for the Blue and Gold were seniors Patrik Sartz (Stora Sundby, Sweden) and Jace Bures (Odell, NE) and junior Cody Rutter (Palmyra, PA). Sartz, who notched the best air rifle score of his career (598) in the previous match, posted a 593 out of 600 to lead the Nanooks air rifle team for the second time in as many matches. Rookie Dustin Chesebro (Laramie, WY) registered the best mark of his young career with a 587, followed by Rutter's 586 and Bures' 580.

In smallbore, Rutter was the champion with a 587. Bures and Sartz both shot a 580 and senior Layne Lewis (Fairbanks, AK) registered a 573.

The Nanooks return to Fairbanks to host Air Force Academy on Nov. 21-22 at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range, located on the bottom level of the Patty Center. Both matches begin at 9 a.m. AKT.
