Layral was a three-year letterwinnner for the Alaska Nanooks men's swimming team from 1970-73, before the men's team was cut due to budget issues. Layral was a three-time All-American for the Nanooks, as well as a record-holder when competing against NCAA Division I teams in the 200-yrd freestyle.

Layral continues to reside in Fairbanks and is most notably recognized for his community service actions throughout the Fairbanks North Star Borough.

"I don't think I've ever seen myself as a leader, I mostly just have this urge to give back," Layral said in his interview with Sfraga. "I came to UAF on a whim and it ended up being a life-changing experience."
