FAIRBANKS – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team (0-21, 0-13 GNAC) dropped its contest to Simon Fraser on Thursday evening, falling by a final score of 92-54.
How it Happened
The Nanooks opened the game by grabbing a 10-6 lead over the Red Leafs, with Tamai Mancuso knocking down a pair of threes and adding a put-back layup to help the 'Nooks build their lead. However, Simon Fraser ended the quarter on a 9-0 run, and Alaska found itself down 15-10 after the opening 10 minutes. SFU continued its run by scoring four unanswered points out of the break before Chozen Horn-Young got the 'Nooks back on the board with a free throw. Pearle Green and Mancuso added a pair of makes from inside the arc over the remainder of the quarter, while Emily Freeman connected on a three, but the Nanooks entered the locker room down 46-22 after a 10-0 Red Leafs run to close out the half.
Freeman got things going in the third by knocking down another three. Green added a make from beyond the arc, and Mancuso drained a pair of jumpers, but the Nanooks could not make a dent into Simon Fraser's lead, and entered the final 10 minutes down 70-38. Desiree Redfox and Mancuso got the scoring started in the fourth by each making a pair of free throws, and Green followed by hitting a three. From there, Mancuso took over, scoring Alaska's final nine points on three triples, but it would not be enough for Alaska to get back into the game.
