FAIRBANKS – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team (0-12, 0-4 GNAC) dropped its game against the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks, 84-43, in the final game of its homestand.
How it Happened
The Nanooks struggled to find their offensive footing early in the contest, going scoreless for nearly half of the first quarter. When Pearle Green hit a three with 5:12 remaining, Alaska found itself trailing 11-3. The 'Nooks made three more field goals over the latter half of the opening quarter, and ended the period down 22-9. The Nighthawks opened the second with nine unanswered points before a Jazlynn Novelli jumper got the Nanooks on the board. Green and Emily Freeman would connect on shots from beyond the arc during the quarter, but the Nighthawks used a 12-3 run over the last five minutes of the quarter to take a 46-19 lead into the halftime break.
The Nanooks began the third quarter strong, getting baskets from Tamai Mancuso and Amelia Brady on their opening two possessions, but the Nighthawks responded with a 9-0 run, increasing the deficit to 32. Genevieve Velasquez provided the offense for the rest of the quarter, scoring Alaska's next eight points to close out the third. However, that would not be enough to cut into the Nighthawks' advantage, and Alaska entered the final 10 minutes of play down 60-31. Velasquez and Mancuso were the only two Nanooks to score in the fourth, with Velasquez knocking down a pair of two-point field goals to go along with three free throws, and Mancuso connecting on a three and a layup.
