ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team (0-13, 0-5 GNAC) fell to the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves 76-41 on Saturday evening. The Nanooks trailed 12-10 at the end of one, but were outscored 21-7 in the second quarter, and could not overcome the deficit.
How it Happened
Jazlynn Novelli scored Alaska's first four points of the contest on a pair of baskets before Pearle Green knocked down a three to put the 'Nooks in front 7-5. The Seawolves would retake the lead 12-8 late in the quarter, but a Marney Rees layup with nine seconds left made it a two-point game at the end of one.
Neither team scored for the first two minutes of the second quarter, with Green opening the scoring with a three at the 7:52 mark to put the Nanooks back in front by one. However, UAA followed with an 11-0 run to give them a 10-point lead. Tamai Mancuso ended the run with a pull-up jumper, but the hosts logged another 10-0 run to go up 33-15 with 1:16 left in the half. Desiree Redfox would end the half with a layup, but the 'Nooks still trailed 33-17 entering the break.
The Nanooks did all their scoring in the first five minutes of the third quarter, posting 13 points in the opening 4:34. Novelli scored six of those 13 points, while Mancuso added four. However, they would go scoreless for the latter half of the quarter, allowing a 10-0 UAA run to end the third to put them behind 56-30. Mancuso would tack on seven more points in the final quarter, knocking down a pair of layups and a three.
Inside the Numbers
- Tamai Mancuso led the way with 13 points for the Nanooks, going 6-12 from the field. She added two assists.
- Jazlynn Novelli recorded a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double, going 6-16 from the field. She tied for the team lead with two steals.
- Pearle Green had seven points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals.
- Marney Rees tied for the team lead with 10 rebounds and scored four points.
- The Nanooks shot 18-60 (30%) from the field, 3-18 (16.7%) from three and converted just 2-8 free throw attempts.
What's Next
The Nanooks continue their road trip next week with games at Western Washington and Simon Fraser. They face off against the Vikings on Thursday, Jan. 15, at 6 p.m. AKST, and conclude their string of road games against the Red Leafs on Saturday, Jan. 17, at noon AKST.
