Nanooks Fall to Wildcats in GNAC Home Opener

FAIRBANKS – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team (0-11, 0-3 GNAC) battled the 16th-ranked Central Washington Wildcats on Thursday afternoon, but fell 69-49 to begin 2026.

How it Happened
The Nanooks fell behind early, trailing 8-2 after three early Wildcats field goals. However, Alaska would tie things up at eight thanks to baskets from Genevieve Velasquez, Amelia Brady and Jazlynn Novelli. Pearle Green eventually gave the Nanooks the lead after connecting on a three, and a Marney Rees layup in the closing seconds of the first quarter gave the Blue and Gold a 19-18 advantage after the opening 10 minutes.

Novelli got things going for the Nanooks to start the second, knocking down a three and a two in the opening minute to build their lead to 24-18. The 'Nooks held on to their lead for most of the quarter, with Novelli adding a layup and Tamai Mancuso knocking down a pair of two-point jumpshots, but the Wildcats ended the period on a 5-0 run, hitting a layup with 36 seconds left to put them on top 33-32 entering the halftime break.

Novelli and Green provided the offense for the Nanooks in the third, each knocking down a pair of baskets, but Alaska was outscored 19-8 in the quarter and entered the final 10 minutes trailing 52-40. Despite two more jumpshots from Novelli and a three-pointer from Green in the final quarter, the Nanooks could not keep up with the Wildcats, and the game ended with a 15-2 CWU run.
