FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks and Alaska Anchorage Seawolves opened the 31st Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup on Friday, Jan. 16. The two sides skated to a 1-1 tie with UAA claiming the shootout and earning the extra point in the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup standings. They currently lead 2-1.
How it Happened
The Nanooks came out firing early as
Michael Citara lit the lamp only 3:05 into the first period. He took a pass from
Braden Birnie, who played the puck from
Peyton Platter in the defensive zone, and fired a shot past Alaska Anchorage netminder Tyler Krivtsov. The 1-0 lead stood for much of the first, but UAA's Aaron Reierson tied it up with 44.4 seconds left in the first on a Karter McNarland pass. Pavol Funtek earned the secondary on the equalizer.
These proved to be the only goals of the night. UAA outshot the 'Nooks 17-7 in the first period, but Alaska slowed their attack down. The Nanooks outshot them 10-6 in the second and UAA outshot Alaska 6-5 in the third. In the overtime period, Alaska had it's chances, riding a five-minute major from regulation into the extra period, but despite seven shots on goal to UAA's one, they could not find the game-winner. The game ended in an official tie, but the Seawolves would go on to win the shootout, earning an additional point in the Gov Cup standings.
