Nanooks Fall to Vikings on Thursday Evening

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team (0-14, 0-6 GNAC) dropped its matchup against the Western Washington Vikings on Thursday evening by a final of 72-47.

How it Happened
The Nanooks began the game by allowing eight unanswered points before Genevieve Velasquez got them on the board with a jumper. Pearle Green added another basket to make it 10-4, and Tamai Mancuso closed the quarter by scoring Alaska's final eight points, including knocking down back-to-back threes in the final 1:15 of the period. However, the Nanooks would end the first trailing 20-12.

Mancuso would score Alaska's first four points of the second on a layup and two free throws in the opening three minutes. However, the Vikings responded with an 8-0 run to increase their lead to 34-16 with 3:53 remaining in the second. Alycia Shelley ended the run by converting a pair of free throws, and Mancuso ended the half by scoring six points in the final 1:24, hitting a layup and a pair of two-point jumpers to give her 18 points at halftime. Despite ending the half on a 6-2 run, the Nanooks entered the break trailing 42-24.

The Nanooks began the third scoreless over the first 3:25, allowing the Vikings to build their lead to 49-24. Emily Freeman converted a pair of free throws to give the 'Nooks their first points of the third, and Marney Rees, Mancuso and Green knocked down layups over the rest of the quarter, but the Nanooks entered the final 10 minutes trailing 57-34. Freeman, Green and Mancuso all connected on threes in the fourth, with Mancuso's make from beyond the arc giving her a team-high 25 points.

Inside the Numbers

  • Tamai Mancuso led all scorers with 25 points, going 9-14 from the field and 3-5 from three while knocking down all four of her free throw attempts. She finished with three rebounds, an assist and a steal.
  • Emily Freeman and Pearle Green each posted seven points. Freeman led the team with four assists, and Green tied for the team lead with two steals.
  • Marney Rees led the Nanooks with six rebounds on the night.
  • The Nanooks shot 17-47 (36.2%) from the field, 5-21 (23.8%) from three, and 8-12 (66.7%) from the charity stripe during the contest.
  • Alaska grabbed 23 rebounds to Western Washington's 37.
