Nanooks Fall in Game Two at Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Nanooks hockey team fell 5-2 on Saturday night at No. 12/14 Cornell. Alaska is now 5-13-1 on the season while Cornell improves to 11-4-0 on the year.

How it Happened
After nearly 15 minutes of scoreless hockey in the first period, it was Cornell who struck first. Ryan Walsh tallied on the power play giving the Big Red a 1-0 advantage. That lead stood until 4:41 into the second period when Peyton Platter scored the first equalizer of the night for the 'Nooks. William Fleet put a centering pass near the crease where Platter possessed the puck. He made a nice move near the crease to get Cornell netminder Remington Keopple out of the crease before bringing it back to the middle for the goal.

The 1-1 tie lasted only 1:06 as Cornell answered back with a Charlie Major goal 5:47 into the second. They led 2-1 entering the final 20 minutes of regulation. Alaska managed another answer, this time behind Jhett Larson. Following a faceoff win, Peyton Platter fired a tight-angled shot around the goal line; Larson played the far side rebound and found the back of the net making it 2-2 11:01 into the third.

The two sides nearly skated to the 3v3 overtime period, but after a four-on-four, Cornell found Jonathan Castagna leaving the penalty box, and on the breakaway, he beat Calvin Vachon for the game-winner with 1:19 remaining. Cornell added two empty-net goals to make it a 5-2 final.
