FAIRBANKS - The NCAA Division I Independent Hockey coaches made their selections for the 2024-25 NCAA Division I Independent Hockey honorees and all-star teams. The Nanooks were represented by
Broten Sabo, earning all-star status as a defenseman.
"It is great to see Broten win this award," said head coach
Erik Largen. "He is someone who took a huge step for us this season. He provided steady play with great offensive output. We are looking forward to seeing his continued progress over the next couple of years." Sabo made strides for the Nanooks this season following a rookie year where he posted three points. This season, the blue-liner was second on the team in scoring, posting 21 points on eight goals and 13 assists. His 13 assists was the second-most on the roster this year, and his eight goals was third. He became the first 20-point scoring defenseman for the Nanooks since Chris Jandric posted 22 points (5-17--22) during the 2019-20 season.
His eight goals scored this season was the most by a defenseman since Justin Woods tallied nine (9-11--20) in the 2017-18 season. He had four multi-point performances this season. His first came on Nov. 9, 2024 at Union where he posted a pair of assists. On Feb. 1, 2025 at home, he scored a career-high three points with a goal and two assists in the Nanooks 5-1 win over the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves. He also scored a goal and added an assist in the deciding game of the 2024-25 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup series, helping Alaska claim the cup for the 14th-straight season.
