TULSA, Okla. - Matt Koethe, former forward and alternate captain for the Alaska Nanooks hockey program, has signed his first professional deal with the Tulsa Oilers of the ECHL. Koethe has already appeared in a pair of games for Tulsa, picking up his first-career point, an assist, on Mar. 7.

"Matt has been a part of the Fairbanks community a long time," said head coach Erik Largen. "We are so excited for him to be able to get this opportunity in professional hockey. He is someone who has truly earned the chance."

Koethe is a four-year member of the Nanooks hockey program, first joining in 2020-21. His first action in the blue and gold came in 2021-22 in the Nanooks return to the ice, and he was an immediate help. The forward never posted less than 10 points in a season. Year one saw him score a pair of goals and tally eight assists for 10 points. In year two, Koethe posted five goals and seven helpers for 12 points. In years three and four, he posted career-highs for assists and total points while matching his goals scored numbers. In 2023-24 he had three assists and a career-high 10 assists. This past season, he tied his career-high five goals and posted eight assists for a second-straight 13-point season. He finished his NCAA time with 127 games and 48 points on 15 goals and 33 assists. 

This past season, Koethe earned the title of alternate captain. From 11/8-11/15, Koethe had his best stretch of the season, posting a three-game scoring streak with five points in three games. This included back-to-back two-point performances at Union (11/9) and Alaska Anchorage (11/15).
