FAIRBANKS - The Nanooks hockey team claimed the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup for the 14th-straight season with a dramatic shootout victory over UAA and an official NCAA tie. Alaska moves to 9-11-6 with the tie.
How it Happened
After skating to a 0-0 tie in the first period, the Nanooks broke the drought with a
Broten Sabo unassisted goal 7:03 into the second. The one-goal advantage lasted only 1:54 as Dylan Finlay of UAA quickly found the equalizer 8:57 into the middle stanza. Before going to the third period,
Chase Dafoe picked up a power-play tally. He cemented himself outside of the crease, redirecting a
Matt Hubbarde pass into the back of the net, giving Alaska a 2-1 advantage heading to the third.
In the third,
William Lawson-Body extended the Nanooks lead to 3-1, 1:35 into the third.
Matt Koethe found himself on a breakaway, and following a quick shot and rebound, Lawson-Body found the back of the net through a battle in the crease. Unfortunately for the Nanoooks, UAA picked up a pair of unanswered goals in the third to tie the game at 3-3 and force an overtime period. In the OT period, the Nanooks opened on the power play. Despite the man-advantage, Alaska could not capitalize, and the game ended in an official tie. To decide the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup, the two sides went to a three-person shootout to decide game six.
Lassi Lehti stepped up in the shootout and made all three saves for the Nanooks. After
Chase Dafoe and
Matt Hubbarde were stopped,
Kyle Gaffney put away the third and final shootout attempt, sending the Carlson Center into a frenzy as the cup was again claimed.
