AZUSA, Calif. – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team (0-9, 0-2 GNAC) fell to Azusa Pacific 82-50 in the first game of their California road trip.
How it Happened
A Jazlynn Novelli three gave the Nanooks an early 3-2 lead, but the Cougars responded with a 12-0 run to take a 14-3 lead. Novelli and Genevieve Velasquez snapped the scoreless run for the Nanooks with a pair of two-point jumpshots, and Tamai Mancuso and Emily Freeman knocked down threes to close the quarter, but the Nanooks ended the first trailing 21-15. Amelia Brady got the Nanooks on the board in the second with a layup, and Novelli added two more baskets to bring her scoring total to nine. However, Alaska fell behind 49-30 at the end of the half.
Azusa Pacific began the third with a 14-0 run, with Brady scoring Alaska's first points of the half on a layup. Despite the Blue and Gold ending the period on an 8-6 run, with Velasquez scoring four of those points, they entered the final 10 minutes down 69-38. Novelli scored six points in the fourth on three field goals, but Alaska fell to APU.
Inside the Numbers
- Jazlynn Novelli led the Nanooks with 15 points in her Nanooks debut, shooting 7-17 from the field. She added two rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals.
- Genevieve Velasquez posted a team-high nine rebounds to go along with eight points.
- Emily Freeman scored seven points on 3-5 shooting and dished two assists.
- Tamai Mancuso also had two assists and finished with six points.
- Alaska grabbed 31 rebounds to Azusa Pacific's 45.
- The Nanooks shot 20-51 (39.2%) from the field and 3-15 (20%) from three while converting seven of their eight free throw attempts.

The Nanooks take on Biola on Saturday, Jan. 20, in their final game before the holiday break. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. AKST.
