FAIRBANKS – The Nanooks men's basketball team (6-4, 1-1 GNAC) posted another strong offensive showing on Saturday afternoon, cracking triple-digits for the second straight game to defeat the West Coast Baptist Eagles 106-64.
How it Happened
The Nanooks opened up a 12-0 lead at the start of the game, with Mike Miller scoring seven of those 12 points to put the 'Nooks up double-digits less than four minutes into the contest. West Coast Baptist got on the board at the 16:06 mark, but Davis Crilly responded straight away with a three. Alaska's lead eventually shrank back down to single digits after a 9-5 Eagles run made it 20-11, but the 'Nooks would follow by scoring 16 points over the next four minutes while allowing just two. They were led by two Jalai O'Keith threes during the run, putting them up 36-13 at the midway point of the first half. From there, Alaska cruised into the halftime break. They got eight points from Miller in the final 10 minutes of the half, including a pair of emphatic fastbreak dunks, to help them take a 57-31 lead into the break.
Crilly started the scoring for the Nanooks in the second with a layup, answering an Eagles' jumpshot to begin the half. After another basket for WCBC, the 'Nooks began a 7-0 run that saw their lead increase to over 30 points. The Eagles ended the run by hitting a free throw, but the offense kept coming for the Nanooks, as O'Keith found Miller on an alley-oop dunk the following possession. O'Keith added a two-point jumper to bring Alaska's lead to 70-36, and a 13-5 Nanooks run saw their lead increase to 40. The 'Nooks continued to find success via the alley-oop, with Weiser finding Cortarius Mingo on the lob to give the Blue and Gold an 85-45 lead with 11:18 remaining. Weiser connected from deep less than a minute later, and Alaska saw its lead increase to 43 with 10 minutes to go. Neither side would score for the next 2:15, with Jackson Krug ending the offensive drought with a layup. Jett McCullough sank a three on the following possession, and Mingo added another triple to put the Nanooks over the century mark. McCullough and Mingo provided the offense from there, as the 'Nooks ended the night by claiming a 106-64 win.
