Volleyball Knocks Off Central Washington for Key GNAC Victory

FAIRBANKS - The Nanooks volleyball team picked up a key win against GNAC opponent Central Washington (11-5, 7-2 GNAC) on Oct. 18. With the win, the Nanooks improve to 16-3, 7-2 GNAC to create a four-team tie at the top of the GNAC standings. 

How it Happened
After dropping the first set, the Nanooks turned around the momentum and grabbed the second, third, and fourth set to pick up the four-set victory over the RV Central Washington Wildcats. In the first, CWU picked up a quick set one victory by the score of 25-17. They used 14 kills and a hitting percentage of .333 while the Nanooks managed just 10 kills and a hit percentage of .057 in the opening set. In the second, the Nanooks turned it around, posting 15 kills on a .244 hit percentage while the Wildcats had 13 kills and six errors. The Nanooks quickly tied the match up at 1-1 with a 25-20 set two victory. 

In the third set, Alaska posted a huge victory, keeping CWU to just three kills and four errors (-.045). The Nanooks grabbed a big third set, posting 16 kills and six errors while swinging .370 to grab a 25-14 victory and take a 2-1 lead. In the third, both sides battled. Central Washington had themselves a big showing with 14 kills and just one error, while the Nanooks had 23 kills and seven errors. Both sides swung an impressive .333 swing percentage, but it was the Nanooks who came out on top in the fourth, winning with a set score of 25-23. 

With the set four victory, the Nanooks knocked off Central Washington 3-1. 

Inside the Numbers
  • Haylee Lyons led the way for the Nanooks, picking up 13 kills (.250) while adding 12 digs, four blocks, one ace, and one assist.
  • Mikala Henderson added 13 kills as well, while posting 13 digs, and two assists. 
  • Cynphany Henderson led the distribution department with 25 assists while adding 11 digs and six kills.
  • Ainsley Smith added 21 assists, three digs, and three kills in the win. 
  • Elena Guc finished with 10 kills, three blocks, and two digs. 
  • Presley Engelauf also had herself a day, posting 10 kills, four blocks, an assist, and a dig. 
  • The Nanooks had 62 assists tonight, 64 kills, and 59 digs. 
What's to Come
The Nanooks hit the road to face Saint Martin's and Western Oregon next week. They'll stay on the road after next week's matchups to face Alaska Anchorage on the road.
