Volleyball Takes Down Western Oregon in Four Sets to Open Up Second Half of GNAC Play

MONMOUTH, Ore. - The Nanooks volleyball team improved to 17-3, 8-2 GNAC after defeating the Western Oregon Wolves (2-16, 1-9 GNAC) in four sets on Thursday, Oct. 23. 

How it Happened
Alaska kicked off the night with wins in set one and two to take an early 2-0 lead. Western Oregon battled back to take the third set, forcing a fourth. In the fourth, the two sides left it all on the court, but it was the Nanooks who came out on top to claim the four set win. The first set saw the Nanooks post 14 kills on a .136 swing percentage while keeping the Wolves under 10 kills at just nine. The Nanooks' attack got better in the second set as they posted 13 kills and five errors while swinging .242. 

In the third, WOU picked up the set win 25-23. Alaska surrendered eight errors while swinging .133. The fourth was the same score, but the Nanooks came out on top as they posted a match-high .256 swing percentage with 15 kills. After taking a four-point lead, the Nanooks gave up four-straight to WOU for a 21-21 tie. Haylee Lyons got the 'Nooks back on the board with a kill before the Henderson sisters scored the final three points of the match for the win. 

Inside the Numbers
  • Mikala Henderson led the attack with 14 kills. She added 10 digs for a double-double, three assists, and a block. 
  • Haylee Lyons also finished with a double-double, posting 12 kills and 10 digs. She had two blocks. 
  • Cynphany Henderson was all over the place and nearly posted a triple-double finishing the night with 19 assists, 16 digs, and eight kills. She also had an ace and a block. 
  • Ainsley Smith had a team-high 21 assists tonight, adding eight digs and a kill.
  • Tessa Onaga had a game-high 23 digs and added six assists. Kellan Flynn also posted double-digit digs, finishing with 10. 
  • The Nanooks posted 83 digs while Western Oregon had 71. They also had 51 assists to WOU's 41 and outhit them 56-44 in kills. 
What's to Come
The Nanooks travel to Lacey, Wash. for a matchup with the Saint Martin's Saints (11-7, 4-6 GNAC). SMU lost tonight to Alaska Anchorage in five sets.
