NAMPA, Idaho - Despite putting up the second-most points of the season with 90, the Nanooks dropped their game against the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks today by a final of 115-90. Alaska falls to 5-7 on the season and 0-4 in GNAC play with the loss.
How it Happened
The Nanooks fell behind early, trailing by double-digits less than halfway through the opening quarter at 14-3. The Nighthawks' lead grew to 18 with less than a minute left in the first, building a 29-11 advantage before back-to-back Miranda Lomax threes helped Alaska trim the deficit to 29-17 entering the second.
The Nanooks continued to cut into the lead to start the second quarter, with Bobbi Clark notching three points on a layup and free throw to bring the deficit to single digits. Alaska made it a seven-point game after a Lomax three and Halle Waram layup brought the score to 41-34. Later in the quarter, an Anna Nevison connection from beyond the arc made it a two-score contest at 44-39, but an 8-2 run for the hosts gave NNU a double-digit lead as it entered the halftime break ahead 52-41.
The 'Nooks got a layup from Destiny Reimers and a three from Emily Freeman at the start of the third, but 11 unanswered NNU points put it up 21 points at 67-46 with 6:22 left in the third. Lomax sank three triples in the quarter, but Alaska still trailed 80-65 entering the final period. In the fourth quarter, Nevison led the way in the shooting department, knocking down four of six threes in the final 10 minutes. However, it was not enough, as the Nanooks fell by 25 to the Nighthawks.
Inside the Numbers
- Miranda Lomax led the Nanooks with 26 points, with all her field goals coming via the three ball. She went 7-of-14 from beyond the arc and 5-of-8 from the line.
- Anna Nevison put up 18 points and, like Lomax, had all her field goals come from three-pointers. She shot 6-of-10 from deep.
- Destiny Reimers was the other Nanook to post double-digit points, finishing the contest with 10 and going 3-of-7 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. She grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, tied for the team lead in steals with three and dished out four assists.
- Jayda Van Dyke led the way in the assists department, dishing out five. She posted three steals, tying for the team lead, and finished with eight points on 3-of-5 shooting.
- Alaska was outrebounded 51-32 in the game.
- The Nanooks got 60 points from their bench, compared to 38 for the Nighthawks. However, NNU led in points off turnovers (26-21), second-chance points (22-5), points in the paint (44-20) and fastbreak points (22-3).
What's to Come
The Nanooks return to the Patty Center next week, welcoming Alaska Anchorage for a rivalry matchup on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 1 p.m.
