FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks hockey team has announced updates for their upcoming 2024-25 season.
First, the Nanooks will open their season on Sept. 21 with their annual Blue/Gold scrimmage at the Patty Ice Arena. A week later, the Nanooks will host the Grand Canyon Antelopes for an exhibition matchup. This game will be the first of three games the Nanooks will play at Fairbanks' Big Dipper Arena. The following weekend, Oct. 5-6, the Nanooks will host Penn State for their regular-season openers, rounding out their three-game span at the Dipper.
Tickets to the exhibition and regular-season games played at the Dipper will be General Admission only.
The Carlson Center, the official home ice of the Alaska Nanooks hockey program, will host its first game of the 2024-25 season on Dec. 6-7 when the Augustana Vikings make their second-ever trip to the 49th State. In Sept. 2023, the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly announced funding for the Carlson Center to undergo massive upgrades including new lower-level bleachers, a new refrigeration system for ice creation, preparation and maintenance and new NHL-size boards and glass.
"These Carlson Center renovations, including NHL-size ice and new lower bowl seating are going to change the way our fans, students, and the community experience Nanooks Hockey." said Director of Athletics Brock Anundson, "There's no doubt this will provide an enhanced experience, faster pace, and more exciting environment for years to come. Our student-athletes will now also have the opportunity to compete on the same size ice sheet that may bridge them into their professional careers. We're grateful and excited to continue to partner with the FNSB on this amazing upgrade." These upgrades will usher in a new look at the Carlson Center as the Nanooks return to the NHL-size ice (200'x85') for the first time since moving into the Carlson Center on a permanent basis in 1990.
"We are very excited for all of the different changes this year." said Coach Largen, "Playing at the Big Dipper for the first two weekends will give our community a fun opportunity to experience Nanook hockey in a different way. The changes to the Carlson Center will make the game even more exciting for the fans and help better develop our players for future careers in pro hockey."
With these upgrades, the Nanooks and the Carlson Center will match what the professional level plays on while delivering an elevated experience for fans and students who will get closer to the fast-paced game. Following Augustana in December, the Nanooks will have an additional five home games played at the Carlson Center.
