FAIRBANKS - Monday, June 10 marked the beginning of construction for the highly-anticipated world-class ski trail system.
On March 23, 2024, at the Nanooks Gold Rush Fundraiser, presented by Usibelli Coal Mine, UCM announced a $300,000 donation to Nanooks athletics for groundbreaking, world-class ski trails to be developed outside the Patty Center on UAF's south slope. This new trail system aims to transform the UAF campus into a hub for cross-country skiing. It offers a 1.25k sprint loop with another 1.25k loop addition to create a 2.5K course option, adding trail variety for both recreational and competitive skiing. Designed to be spectator-friendly and suitable for year-round use, the trails will serve the UAF community, Nanooks athletics, residents, and athletes worldwide.
The Alaska Nanooks ski program continues to compete at the highest level. In 2024, they finished eighth at the NCAA Ski Championships, giving them 10 all-time top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships and their fourth-straight top-10 finish. 2024 also saw the 'Nooks finish with three All-American honors as Rosie Fordham earned a Second Team All-American finish in the 7.5k freestyle on day two before Kendall Kramer and Mariel Pulles both earned Second Team All-American honors on day four
"Usibelli is excited to partner with Nanooks athletics to create this new trail system." Said Lisa Cassino, Vice President of Usibelli Coal Mine, "It can put UAF on the map as a premier destination for national and international ski competitions. We are excited to see its positive impact unfold."
The new trail system is set to enhance physical and mental health opportunities for students, faculty, and the broader Fairbanks community. It will also elevate UAF's capacity to host major events, including the NCAA Nordic Ski Championships.
"We are immensely grateful for Usibelli's leadership and generosity in making this project possible," said Brock Anundson, Alaska's Director of Athletics. "This donation is a game-changer for our athletic programs and the community. It enhances our campus facilities and supports our mission of promoting excellence among our student-athletes and athletic programs."
This project has garnered support from notable figures, including Olympic cross-country ski athlete, former-Nanook and UAF graduate, Logan Hanneman, who has signed on as a spokesperson to bring awareness and additional fundraising support for the initiative.
The expected completion date is June 30. The work area will be closed to unauthorized personnel during construction.
