FAIRBANKS - The Nanooks hockey program has announced its schedule for the upcoming 2024-25 NCAA hockey season. Alaska is set to compete in their fourth straight independent season.
"Looking at our away schedule, we have many high-quality opponents in some amazing venues." said Nanooks hockey head coach Erik Largen, "This will allow our student-athletes to have experiences like no other team in the country. And as for Nanook fans, they should be very excited to see the quality of opponents who will be competing in Fairbanks; we cannot wait for the start of the season."
2024-25 will open up with the annual Blue/Gold Scrimmage on Sept. 21. The following week the Nanooks face Grand Canyon in a preseason exhibition matchup on Saturday, Sept. 28. Another week later, also in Fairbanks, the Nanooks will welcome Penn State Oct. 5-6 for their regular-season openers. The Nittany Lions have not visited Fairbanks since the 2014-15 season; that lone game resulted in a 4-3 Nanooks win. The 'Nooks will maintain the home-ice advantage Oct. 11-12 when they welcome the Michigan Tech Huskies to Fairbanks for a two-game series. Alaska went 1-1-1 against MTU a year ago, splitting on the road in Houghton, Mich. before falling in OT at the 2023 Great Lakes Invitational on Dec. 28, 2023.
Following their openers at home, the Nanooks hit the road for consecutive road matchups. They'll open up their away schedule Oct. 18-19 with a visit to Notre Dame before going to New York for a two-game series with Clarkson on Nov. 1-2 and a visit at Union College on Nov. 8-9.
The blue and gold come back to the 49th State on Nov. 15-16 with the first series in the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup. Alaska Anchorage hosts the first leg at the AVIS Alaska Sports Complex. After a week off, the Nanooks head back on the road to the University of Minnesota. The Gophers welcome the 'Nooks on Nov. 29-30. Alaska has not seen Minnesota since 2021-22 when they split at 3M Arena at Mariucci. A week later, the Nanooks are back in Fairbanks, welcoming Augustana for the second time in program history. The Nanooks and Vikings do battle on Dec. 6-7. The two teams faced off last season for the first time in program history and Alaska won the series 2-1-1.
On Dec. 28-29, the Nanooks will participate in their second-straight holiday tournament; this season they'll take part in the 2024 Kwik Trip Holiday Face-Off in Milwaukee, Wis. at the Fiserv Forum. Matchups are not set, but Ferris State, UConn and Wisconsin join the Nanooks at this year's installment of the Holiday Face-Off. Alaska starts 2025 on the road on Jan. 3-4 at Minnesota Duluth. They return to Duluth for the first time in three seasons after taking on the Bulldogs in 2021-22.
The Nanooks return to home ice on Jan. 10-11, 2025 as Simon Fraser comes to town for a two-game weekend.
Jan. 18, 2025 will be the final road game in the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup as Alaska heads to Anchorage one final time. Following Anchorage, the Nanooks head to Amherst, Mass. for a matchup with Umass on Jan. 24-25 before coming home for their final homestand. Jan. 31-Feb. 1 and Feb. 8 will see the Nanooks play UAA three times to wrap-up their 2024-25 home schedule and put a bow on the 2024-25 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup.
Alaska ends their regular-season on the road with a trip to Lindenwood on Feb. 14-15, a trip to Augustana on Feb. 21-22 and their final series at LIU on Feb. 28-March 1.
