Nanooks Head Back to Howelsen Hill for NCAA Skiing Championships

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. - The Nanooks ski team will head to Steamboat Springs, Colorado, to participate in the NCAA Skiing Championships.

Race Details
Day one will consist of a 7.5k freestyle interval start. Day two will be a 20k classic pursuit start.

Last Time Out
The Nanooks were last at the 2024 RMISA Championships at Crosscut Mountain Sports Complex. There, they took fourth-place in the Nordic standings with 262 points. Mike Ophoff was the top-finisher for the Nanooks in the 20k, taking 3rd with a time of 56:06.3. Christopher Kalev joined Ophoff in the top-10, finishing sixth with 56:48.8. Ben Dohlby was the final scoring Nanook, finishing in 21st with a time of 1:00.33.0.  Aidan Hay and Josh Baurick followed right behind Dohlby, finishing in 22nd and 23rd-place. Hay was 15 seconds behind Dohlby, posting a time of 1:00:48.6 and Baurick was another 11 seconds behind, finishing in 1:00:59.4. 

In the women's race, the Nanooks were led by Kendall Kramer, who finished in seventh with a time of 1:15:23.7. Rosie Fordham finished just outside of the top 10 at 13th, with a time of 1:16:51.3. Mariel Pulles was the final racer to score points for the 'Nooks as the senior posted a 19th-place finish in 1:18:12.0.

  • Alaska wrapped up the RMISA regular-season in seventh-place overall with 958 total points.
  • Both the men's and women's teams are in fifth in the separated Nordic categories. The Nanooks men's team is in fifth with 440 points while the women's team is in fifth with 518 points. 
  • In the combined Nordic standings, Alaska is sixth with their 958 points, trailing UAA by one one point. 
  • Kendall Kramer was named to a 2024 All-RIMSA Team, being named a Women's Nordic First Team selection. 
  • Mariel Pulles and Rosie Fordham were named to All-RIMSA teams as well. Pulles was named a Women's Nordic Second Team selection, and Fordham as a Women's Nordic Honorable Mention. 
  • On the men's side, both Christopher Kalev and Mike Ophoff were both named as Men's Nordic Honorable Mentions.

Weather Report
The Alaska skiers will be looking at a high of 35 degrees Fahrenheit on Thursday, March 7, with a low of 25. Friday will be much of the same on the upper range of the temperature, calling for 36 degrees, the low will drop falling to a projected 15 degrees. There is a 20 percent chance of precipitation on Thursday and forecast for just five percent on Friday. The humidity will remain around the 70 percent mark on each day. 

Last Season
The Nanooks are looking to build off of their previous two seasons that saw them grab seventh-place finishes, a program-best. Last year, the Nanooks posted 268 points, good for third-most in the Nordic standings. The men's team posted the best score with 155 points while the women's team posted the third-best with 113 points. Alaska raced to seven All-American finishes including one National Champion finish.
