Hockey Skates to Official Tie at Augustana; Grabs Shootout Win

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Nanooks hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie at MIDCO Arena in Sioux Falls, SD at Augustana on Friday, March 1. The tie moves the 'Nooks to 14-14-3 on the season.

Augustana goes to 12-17-4 following Friday's matchup.

Augie held a 1-0 lead after the first period as Hayden Hennen tallied goal number one 6:19 into the first. The goal came only 10 seconds into their first power-play opportunity of the night. Alaska went 0-1 in the first on their man-advantage. After the first 20 minutes of play, AU was outshooting Alaska 9-8.

In the second, the Nanooks nearly doubled the Vikings' amount of shots-on-goal, putting up 15 to their eight. The onslaught led to a pair of second-period goals for the 'Nooks and gave them a 2-1 advantage after 40 minutes. The first came 5:13 into the second and while down a man. Chase Dafoe and Harrison Israels found themselves on a breakaway, following an Israels pass, Dafoe put a shot on net that was saved. The puck found it's way through AU netminder Josh Kotai and settled in the crease near the goal line. Israels crashed hard and was able to put it away into the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1. This was Israels' 18th goal of the season and second short-handed goal of the year.

1:27 later, Kyle Gaffney found a rebound of his own and made it 2-1 Nanooks. The play started with Gaffney's foot deflecting the puck to the blue-line. A.J. Macaulay made a heads-up play, grabbing the puck and keeping it in the zone; he then fired a shot that was saved but Gaffney found the loose puck and on the backhand, found the go-ahead goal at the time. Jonny Sorenson earned the secondary assist on the goal and the 'Nooks took the one-goal lead into the second intermission. Unfortunately it only took 2:53 into the third for the Vikings to tie the game at 2-2 on an Arnaud Vachon goal.

Neither side found the winner in regulation and went to their second-straight overtime matchup against each other. In the overtime period, the Nanooks possessed the puck most of the time, putting three shots-on-goal. 3:28 into the extra time, the Nanooks pulled Pierce Charleson and brought on the extra-attacker, going for the win, but could not capitalize. They also held AU off the board, keeping it tied at 2-2 and picking up their third tie of the season.

In the shootout Brady Risk scored the first goal for the 'Nooks before Chase Dafoe scored the shootout winner in the fourth round. Charleson was scored on in the first round before stopping the next three shots.

These two teams do battle again tomorrow at 3:07 p.m. AKST.
