TEMPE, Ariz. - The Nanooks fell to the nationally-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils on Friday, Feb. 9. The 2-0 loss drops Alaska to 12-11-2 while ASU improves to 19-6-6.
The No. 18/18-ranked Sun Devils posted a goal in each of the first two periods to grab a 2-0 win over the Nanooks.
Just past the midway point of the first period, ASU struck first. 10:58 in, Charlie Schoen made it 1-0 Sun Devils. Ty Jackson won a faceoff straight back to Schoen and off the draw he beat netminder
Pierce Charleson to make it 1-0. The Nanooks outshot Arizona State 9-8 in the first, but ASU held the 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. In the second period both sides had an opportunity on the power play. Arizona State struck on their first of the night as 9:13 into the second, Ty Jackson made it 2-0.
1:33 later, the Nanooks were on a five-minute power play following a contact to the head penalty and game misconduct to Kyle Smolen. Alaska put up 10 shots-on-goal on the major opportunity but came up empty-handed. The 2-0 lead would stand through the rest of the second and all of the third. Alaska would get one power-play opportunity in the third but two shots was all they could get. ASU grabbed the 2-0 win and picked up the game one victory in this weekend's series.
The two teams go at it again tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. AKST.
