TEMPE, Ariz. - The Nanooks hockey team was swept by Arizona State on Saturday, Feb. 10. The 4-2 loss to ASU drops the 'Nooks to 12-12-2 on the season.
ASU is now 20-6-6 on the season.Â
A day after being shutout, the Nanooks got on the board in the first period and skated to a 1-1 tie after the opening 20 minutes. Two goals in the second for ASU gave them a 3-1 lead entering the third. The 'Nooks managed to pull within one with an early goal in the third but an empty-netter for the Sun Devils made it a 4-2 ASU victory.Â
6:32 into the first Arizona State struck first. They used the power play to make it 1-0 on a Matthew Kopperud goal from the slot. Just under 10 minutes later, the Nanooks found the back of the net on a
Chase Dafoe goal. The center found a loose puck that crept through ASU netminder Gibson Homer and put it home to make it a 1-1 game. On the goal,
Braden Birnie and
William Lawson-Body earned the assists; this was Lawson-Body's first-career NCAA point. The 1-1 lead stood through the first intermission. After one, Alaska outshot ASU 13-3, went 0-1 on the power play and 0-1 on the penalty kill.
7:03 into the second period, Ty Jackson made it 2-1 ASU. This also came on the power play. Less than 10 minutes later, ASU struck again. Kopperud got his second goal of the night and third point to extend the lead to 3-1; this goal also came on the power play. In the second, ASU converted on both of their power plays while the 'Nooks did not on their only man-advantage of the second. The Nanooks, once again, outshot the Devils, 13-11 in the second.Â
In the third, the Nanooks made it a one goal game just over a minute in.
Cade Ahrenholz scored his fifth goal of the season to cut the deficit to one 1:08 into the final period. After a blocked shot, Ahrenholz found the loose puck and put a back-hand in the back of the net to make it 3-2 ASU.Â
Despite outshooting ASU in the third, they could not find the equalizer. Arizona State went on to add an empty-net goal by Ethan Szmagaj and grabbed a 4-2 win.
Alaska returns home next weekend and will welcome LIU to the Carlson Center on Feb. 16-17.Â
