Johnson Posts Double-Double but Nanooks Fall to Simon Fraser

BURNABY, B.C. - The Nanooks women's basketball fell to the Simon Fraser Red Leafs on Saturday, Feb. 3. 

The Nanooks fall to 4-17, 2-9 GNAC and Simon Fraser moves to 13-11, 5-6 GNAC. 

The first half was even as the teams played to a halftime tie at 38-38. SFU took a 24-21 advantage after the first quarter and Alaska bounced back to win the second 17-14. Out of the break, the Red Leafs put up a big third quarter to create a lead in the second half before taking the 83-68 win. 

Ellen Silva got the scoring started for the Nanooks with a jumper 15 seconds into the game. She kick-started a 6-0 run to open the game as the 'Nooks held the early advantage. After SFU got on the board, Emma Wass made a layup to make it 8-2 Nanooks in the opening two minutes. SFU slowly chipped away and eventually grabbed a 13-12 lead at the 5:40 mark. The Nanooks pulled back ahead on another Wass bucket followed by an Ekko Hopkins three to make it 17-13. SFU eventually tied the game again at 21-21 and a three-pointer from Sophia Wisotzki made it a 24-21 lead for SFU after one. Simon Fraser quickly grew their lead out to eight to start the second quarter. Ellen Silva stopped the early run for the Red Leafs and started an Alaska run that saw them tie the game at 29-29 on back-to-back Kayla Johnson buckets. 

SFU grew their lead back out to six but Alaska battled back to tie the game at 38-38 before half. Emma Wass connected on a turnaround jumper with three seconds remaining. 

Out of the break, Simon Fraser made a big run. Alaska hung through the opening four minutes but after pulling within three, the Red Leafs used three-straight makes to stretch their lead to 10. They eventually grew their lead to 16 at the end of the quarter. In the fourth, the Nanooks' deficit grew to 22. They battled back to 16 on an Ellen Silva jumper and pulled within 15 on an Emma McKenney three-pointer. SFU went on to grab the win 83-68.

McKenney led the way with 16 points. She went 8-8 from the free-throw line, dished out eight assists and grabbed two rebounds. Three other Nanooks scored in double-digits. Emma Wass followed with 15 on 6-11 shooting. She grabbed six rebounds. Kayla Johnson posted a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double while adding five assists and a block. Silva finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and an assist and block.
