FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks fell to Arizona State on Saturday, Feb. 24. The 3-2 OT loss sends the Nanooks to 14-14-2 on the season.
Alaska got the scoring started 2:34 into the first on a Harrison Israels tally on the power play, Israels' 17th goal on the season. The forward tipped it in front of goal off an assist from Payton Matsui and Cade Neilson. The 1-0 lead stood through the first as Lassi Lehti added seven saves in net for the Nanooks in the opening 20 minutes. In the second, the Sun Devils got on the board quickly, just 1:20 into the period. The Nanooks would respond, as Filip Wiberg netted a tip-in for his first career goal, giving Alaska the 2-1 advantage. After Derek Pys took a shot from the point, Anton Rubstov redirected the puck off the ASU netminder, following the save Matt Koethe cleaned up the rebound for the goal, extending the lead to 3-1.
Despite taking a 3-1 lead, ASU would fight back to score two more in the third forcing overtime. 54 seconds into the overtime period, the Sun Devils scored the game winner.
Alaska will head on the road to face off against Augustana on March 1-2. This will be the Nanooks' first appearance at the Midco Arena.
